Who has said that only the eastern countries are the places where racism receives high preference? The so called well developed rather called over developed western countries are not also free from the problem of racism. That is why the Virginia school district could ban two classic novels on the basis of compliant from a mother who has told that the two novels bear insulting dialogues that could spark the problem of racism. The two novels are “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain. Till date the two classic novels have been considered as the best sources of enriching the literary merit. However now on the people would not be able to get the classic knowledge from such novels.
The ban of the novels:
The novels have been found with the N word many times. Now, what is the N word? I think the protesters want to denote ‘nigger’ as the N word which is an ethnic slur used generally to call the black people. If it is so then surely the novels could make the racism problem. According to the source, the N word appears 219 times in “Huckleberry Finn” and 48 times in “To Kill a Mockingbird.” It is to be noted in this regard that due to that reason the two novels have been challenged since many years for many times. And it has been at last banned. According to the source a mother appealed to the school during the school board meeting to reconsider the curriculum of the school. She told that her son who is biracial was facing problem reading the pages where the N words are printed. Why should a student become uncomfortable reading the text books? There should be some reason. Here is also. The student felt humiliated when he pronounced the word. That is why the ban of such novels from school syllabus is not unjustified.
There is more to say about such incident. The American Library Association also to the side of the mother that the parents have full right and authority to decide which type of text could be suitable for their children. They could decide which word could make the social problem and social integrity. I am not arguing about the ban of the novels. I just want to clarify that only those types of content should be presented to the scholars that can make them enriched in wise knowledge.
